Remembrance Concert

The Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior School pupils gathered in The Alcock, for Harrow’s Remembrance concert, commemorating all those who have been involved with, or affected by, war and conflict since World War One. The concert opened with a performance from the Prep and Senior School Wind Band. There were also musical performances from Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior School choirs, alongside the Violin Ensemble. In between the musical items, the Prep School pupils told the stories of several remarkable Old Harrovian’s who had fought in the First and Second World Wars. Firstly, 2nd Lieutenant Alex Fitch, who was killed in northern France in September 1918 at the age of 19. In Harrow’s War Memorial Building, there is a room dedicated to Fitch’s memory. Above the fireplace is a portrait of Fitch in his army uniform. Over the portrait burns a light that has been burning permanently since 1926. The Prep pupils also told the story of two remarkable Old Harrovian brothers, who were born in Shanghai and were awarded medals for bravery during the Second World War. Ian Oswald Liddell served as a captain in the British Army during the Second World War and was a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for bravery in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Ian’s elder brother David also served in the British Army during the Second World War. David was a recipient of the Military Cross, which is another award given for extreme bravery. The concert ended with a traditional two-minute silence, which was respectfully observed by all the pupils.
