Safeguarding

At Harrow International School Shanghai, safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. We are committed to creating a safe, supportive and inclusive environment where all students can thrive academically, socially and emotionally. The welfare and wellbeing of every child is our highest priority.

We expect all members of our community, including staff, students, parents, visitors and contractors, to share responsibility for keeping children safe.

Policy

Our Safeguarding Policy sets out our commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. It explains the procedures we follow to keep students safe and the actions we take when concerns arise regarding a child’s safety or wellbeing. The policy is reviewed annually.

Meet Our Safeguarding Team

We have designated members of staff who are responsible for safeguarding across the school.

Reporting a Concern

If you are worried about the safety, wellbeing or welfare of a child, please contact a member of the safeguarding team immediately.

Concerns may include:

  • Abuse or neglect
  • Changes in behaviour or wellbeing
  • Bullying or child-on-child abuse
  • Online safety concerns
  • Self-harm or suicidal ideation
  • Mental health concerns
  • Attendance concerns
  • Any situation where a student may be at risk of harm

You do not need proof in order to raise a concern.

Students may speak to:

  • Any trusted adult
  • Their tutor or class teacher
  • A Head of House or pastoral leader
  • Any member of the Safeguarding Team

If something does not feel right, talk to someone. We will listen, take concerns seriously and work with students to ensure they receive the support they need.

Recruitment

The safety of children begins with safer recruitment.

All staff, volunteers and contractors who work with students undergo rigorous recruitment and vetting procedures. Pre-employment safeguarding checks are completed in accordance with the school’s Safeguarding Policy and international safeguarding standards. Staff are expected to uphold the highest professional standards at all times.

Code of Conduct

All employees are required to comply with the school’s professional Code of Conduct and safeguarding expectations.

These standards help ensure that all interactions between adults and students are safe, respectful and appropriate. Safeguarding responsibilities apply to all staff, volunteers, contractors and visitors.

Training

Safeguarding training is mandatory for all staff.

Training is provided during induction and refreshed annually to ensure that staff remain up to date with safeguarding expectations, reporting procedures and emerging risks.

Members of the safeguarding team undertake enhanced safeguarding training and participate in regular professional development to maintain high standards of practice.

Audit and Review

The school’s safeguarding arrangements are subject to regular review.

This includes:

  • Annual internal safeguarding audits
  • Regular review of safeguarding policies and procedures
  • Monitoring of safeguarding training records
  • External safeguarding reviews and audits
  • Ongoing evaluation of safeguarding culture and practice

These processes help ensure that safeguarding systems remain effective and that the welfare of students remains at the centre of school life.
