The Harrow Diploma

The Harrow Diploma brings together the experiences, achievements and personal development that shape a pupil’s time at Harrow Shanghai. It connects classroom learning, pastoral provision, ECAs, trips and visits, leadership and service, helping pupils recognise how these experiences contribute to their growth.

The Diploma is built around six domains: Leadership, Service, Cultivating Key Competencies, Developing Passions and Talents, Nurturing Core Values and Promoting Positive Wellbeing. Together, these encourage pupils to develop academically, personally and socially, while exploring their interests and contributing to the lives of others.

From Year 2 to Year 5, pupils follow a progressive, age-appropriate programme. Younger pupils receive guidance to explore opportunities and recognise their achievements. As they move through the Lower School, they take greater responsibility for completing activities, collecting evidence and reflecting on their progress. In Year 5, pupils explicitly explore all six domains, building a foundation for their transition to the Upper School.

Throughout the Lower School, teachers reinforce Diploma language through everyday learning and provide structured opportunities for reflection. Participation and progress are monitored so that staff can encourage balanced involvement and support pupils who need help finding their confidence or taking the next step. Clear communication with families and regular celebration help make the programme accessible and meaningful for every pupil, regardless of their starting point.

In the Upper School, pupils take increasing ownership of their Diploma. They draw together evidence from different areas of school life, reflect on what they have learned and identify where they want to develop further. Recognition at Pass, Merit and Distinction levels encourages sustained commitment, with Distinction pupils taking part in a Viva to discuss their experiences and personal growth.

Across both sections of the school, reflection is central. Pupils are encouraged to explain how they have developed, recognise their strengths and identify meaningful next steps. Achievements are celebrated through assemblies, certificates, badges, classroom recognition and special events, valuing effort, perseverance and service.

The Diploma’s value lies in the growth pupils demonstrate through their participation. By connecting opportunities across the school, it helps them become more independent, reflective and responsible young people, with the confidence to embrace new challenges and the willingness to contribute to others.
