The Wider Curriculum

Sport

From Harrow Cubs to Sixth Form, sport is an integral aspect of school life at Harrow Shanghai. From the development of fundamental skills to representing the school at local, national and international level, all pupils will be given the opportunity to excel. Our philosophy follows a three-branch model of Participation, Competition and Excellence, with pupils immersed in a broad and balanced range of activities.

Lessons are taught by experienced, fully committed specialist staff, who share the same philosophy of instilling a lifelong love of sport and physical activity in their pupils. It is our goal that all pupils make progress and are given the chance to experience a range of opportunities both within and beyond the curriculum.

All pupils are encouraged to display teamwork, respect and a positive attitude towards PE and Sport. Pupils learn to win and lose gracefully and are given the tools to reflect upon and evaluate their own and others’ performances. Pupils are also encouraged to demonstrate leadership both on and off the field, in line with our school ethos, ‘Educational Excellence for Life and Leadership’.

Our pupils follow a varied curriculum that allows all pupils to benefit from and enjoy sport. We run an extensive fixtures programme in Football, Basketball, Swimming and Volleyball, in which we compete regularly in local, national and international competitions. We also provide competitive opportunities in a range of sports such as Touch Rugby, Table Tennis, Badminton and Athletics. Whilst we are proud of our sports teams, it is by no means our only focus. Our inter-house programme provides competitive opportunities for every pupil in the school in a wide range of sports, with Sports Day and The Long Ducker (a charity sponsored run, which is a tradition of Harrow School in England) particular highlights of the sporting calendar. During PE lessons, pupils do not only focus on our competitive sports but will also participate in lessons that teach physical literacy and a deeper knowledge of the importance of health and fitness.

In addition to weekly PE and swimming lessons, our pupils have access to a range of opportunities in the ECA programme. In the Upper School, pupils also have Games every Wednesday, where our teams are able to train and compete against other schools.
