Expeditions & Trips
Expeditions and residential trips are the key aspects of the School life.
Some of the most memorable learning happens beyond the four walls of the school. At Harrow Shanghai, trips, visits and residential experiences are an important part of a holistic education, giving pupils opportunities to explore new places, apply their learning and discover what they can achieve.
Every year group, from Year 1 to Year 13, takes part in a residential experience of some kind. From Lower School residential trips to the Upper School residential week, these experiences offer increasing challenge and responsibility as pupils grow, helping them build the confidence to step outside their comfort zones.
Time away from familiar routines gives pupils opportunities to practise independence, make decisions and take responsibility for themselves and others. They learn to work with different people, solve problems, manage uncertainty and take considered risks within a supported environment. Shared challenges also strengthen friendships and help pupils recognise the value of teamwork and perseverance.
Every Upper School residential includes a leadership and service link. Pupils are encouraged to consider how they can contribute to the communities and environments they encounter, and to reflect on what they learn from those experiences. A flagship leadership and service residential is a distinctive part of our provision, with destinations such as Vietnam, Malaysia and other locations across Asia connecting personal challenge, cultural understanding and opportunities to serve.
Beyond our residential programme, we seek out a wide range of opportunities for pupils to pursue their interests and experience learning in different settings. These include ski trips, sporting fixtures and tournaments, art and mathematics competitions, and musical events and performances.
We aim to participate in a broad range of events, including opportunities through FOBISIA and ACAMIS, both elsewhere in China and overseas. These experiences allow pupils to represent Harrow, meet peers from other schools and challenge themselves through competition, collaboration and performance. They also help pupils develop perspective, celebrate others’ achievements and learn to respond positively to both success and setbacks.
Across the programme, we want pupils to return with more than memories. We want them to bring back greater independence, practical skills, a broader perspective and the confidence to approach unfamiliar situations with curiosity and courage.
